Louis Le Vau

Louis Le Vau, born in 1613, was a prominent French Baroque architect whose innovative designs left an indelible mark on the landscape of seventeenth-century architecture. Working under the patronage of King Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, Le Vau was instrumental in shaping the French Classical style, skillfully merging it with Baroque elements to create a unique architectural language.

His work is characterized by a remarkable simplicity in structure combined with an elegance in ornamentation, showcasing his ability to balance grandeur with restraint. Among his most celebrated achievements is the exquisite Vaux-le-Vicomte castle, a masterpiece that exemplifies his artistic vision and technical prowess.

In addition to Vaux-le-Vicomte, Le Vau played a significant role in the early designs of the Palace of Versailles, contributing to what would become one of the most iconic royal residences in the world. His legacy is further enriched by his familial connection to architecture, as his brother, François Le Vau, also made notable contributions to the field, including the design of the Saint-Louis-en-l’Île Church in Paris.
