Louis LeBel

Louis LeBel, born on November thirtieth, nineteen thirty-nine, was a distinguished Canadian jurist who served as a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from two thousand to two thousand fourteen. Hailing from Quebec City, he was the son of esteemed lawyer Paul LeBel, Q.C., which likely influenced his path in the legal profession.

LeBel's academic journey began at the Collège des Jésuites, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in nineteen fifty-eight. He pursued his law degree at Université Laval, earning it in nineteen sixty-two, followed by a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto in nineteen sixty-six. His academic excellence was recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Governor General's medal, the Lieutenant General's medal, and the Tessier silver medal.

After being called to the bar in nineteen sixty-two, LeBel practiced law in Quebec City until nineteen eighty-four, during which he also imparted his knowledge as a lecturer at the University of Ottawa and Université Laval. His judicial career began with his appointment to the Quebec Court of Appeal on June twenty-eighth, nineteen eighty-four, a position he held until his elevation to the Supreme Court by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien in two thousand.

In his personal life, LeBel married Louise Poudrier, a fellow lawyer, on August twenty-eighth, nineteen sixty-five. Together, they raised three children: Paul, Catherine, and François, the latter of whom became a judge of the Court of Quebec in two thousand eighteen. Louis LeBel passed away on June eighth, two thousand twenty-three, at the age of eighty-three, leaving behind a legacy of legal excellence and dedication.
