Louis-Léon Lesieur Désaulniers

Louis-Léon Lesieur Désaulniers was born on February twentieth, eighteen twenty-three, in Yamachiche, Lower Canada. He was the son of François Lesieur Desaulniers, a notable political figure who represented Saint-Maurice in the legislative assemblies of Lower Canada and the Province of Canada. Louis-Léon pursued his education at the Séminaire de Nicolet before embarking on a medical career, studying medicine at Trois-Rivières and later at Harvard University, where he graduated in eighteen forty-six.

Upon completing his studies, Désaulniers returned to his hometown of Yamachiche to practice medicine. His political career began when he was elected to represent Saint-Maurice in the Legislative Assembly of Canada in eighteen fifty-four, a position he held again in eighteen fifty-eight and eighteen sixty-one as a member of the parti bleu. However, his political journey faced a setback in eighteen sixty-three when he was defeated.

In eighteen sixty-seven, he was elected to the first Canadian Parliament but chose to resign the following year to take on the role of inspector for prisons and asylums in Quebec, later becoming the president of that agency. In addition to his medical and political endeavors, Désaulniers served as an officer in the local militia, showcasing his commitment to both his profession and his community.

Louis-Léon Lesieur Désaulniers passed away in Montreal in eighteen ninety-six, leaving behind a legacy that included his son, Eugène Merrill, who would also become a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec.
