Louis McLane

Louis McLane, born on May twenty-eighth, seventeen eighty-six, was a distinguished American lawyer and politician whose career spanned several significant roles in the early years of the United States. He hailed from Wilmington, Delaware, and later made his mark in Baltimore, Maryland. A veteran of the War of eighteen twelve, McLane was initially affiliated with the Federalist Party before transitioning to the Democratic Party.

Throughout his political journey, McLane held numerous prestigious positions, including serving as a U.S. representative and senator from Delaware. His influence extended to the national stage as he took on the role of the tenth U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and the twelfth U.S. Secretary of State. Additionally, he served as the ambassador to Great Britain and was the president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

As a member of President Andrew Jackson's Cabinet, McLane played a crucial role during the tumultuous period known as the Bank War. While he adopted a more moderate stance towards the Second Bank of the United States compared to Jackson, he ultimately supported the President's decision in eighteen thirty-two to veto the renewal of the Bank's charter. His contributions also included helping to draft the Force Bill in eighteen thirty-three.

In recognition of his intellectual contributions, McLane was elected to the American Philosophical Society in eighteen thirty-one, further solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in American history.
