Louis Wain

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Louis Wain

Louis Wain, born on August fifth, eighteen sixty in Clerkenwell, London, was an English artist renowned for his whimsical drawings of anthropomorphized cats and kittens. His artistic journey began in earnest when he sold his first drawing in eighteen eighty-one, leading him to leave his teaching position at the West London School of Art the following year to pursue a full-time career as an illustrator.

In eighteen eighty-four, Wain married, but his happiness was short-lived as he became a widower just three years later. Seeking solace, he moved to the Kent coast in eighteen ninety with his mother and five sisters. This coastal retreat became his home, with the exception of a three-year stint in New York, until the family returned to London in nineteen seventeen.

Wain's life took a tragic turn in nineteen fourteen when he suffered a severe head injury in a horse-drawn omnibus accident. This incident marked the beginning of a decline in his mental health, culminating in his certification as insane a decade later. Despite these challenges, he continued to create art during his fifteen years in mental hospitals, producing works that some later recognized as precursors to psychedelic art.

Throughout his career, Wain was a prolific creator, producing hundreds of drawings and paintings annually for various periodicals and books, including the popular 'Louis Wain's Annual' from nineteen hundred one to nineteen twenty-one. His art also graced postcards and advertisements, and he briefly explored ceramics and animated cartoons. Despite his widespread popularity and output, Wain struggled financially, often selling his work cheaply and relinquishing copyright, all while supporting his family.
