Louise Charron

Louise Charron, born on March second, nineteen fifty-one, in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, is a distinguished Canadian jurist. She made history in October two thousand four when she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, becoming the first native-born Franco-Ontarian to hold this esteemed position. This notable distinction has occasionally been confused with that of Louise Arbour, who, while also a prominent figure, was born and raised in Quebec.

Charron’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carleton University in nineteen seventy-two, followed by a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ottawa in nineteen seventy-five. She was called to the Bar of Ontario in nineteen seventy-seven, marking the start of her legal career. Initially, she practiced civil litigation before transitioning to the Crown Attorney's office in nineteen eighty.

In nineteen eighty-eight, Charron took on the role of a law professor at the University of Ottawa, where she taught French common law until nineteen eighty-eight. Her judicial career advanced when she was appointed to the District Court of Ontario in nineteen eighty-eight and subsequently to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in nineteen ninety-five. Although she was eligible to serve on the bench until two thousand twenty-six, she announced her retirement in May two thousand eleven, which took effect on August thirtieth of the same year.

In recognition of her significant contributions to the legal field, Louise Charron was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada on December thirtieth, two thousand twelve, further solidifying her legacy as a trailblazer in Canadian jurisprudence.
