Loujain al-Hathloul, born on July thirty-first, nineteen eighty-nine, is a prominent Saudi women's rights activist and human rights defender. Known for her fearless advocacy, she has become a significant social media figure and a symbol of resistance against oppressive laws in Saudi Arabia, particularly the ban on women driving.
Her activism led to multiple arrests, notably in May two thousand eighteen when she, along with several other activists, was kidnapped in the United Arab Emirates and forcibly returned to Saudi Arabia. There, they faced serious charges, including accusations of attempting to destabilize the kingdom. This period of her life was marked by significant personal turmoil, including the arrest of her ex-husband, Saudi comedian Fahad al-Butairi, who was also detained upon his return to the country.
Despite the challenges she faced, al-Hathloul's commitment to women's rights earned her prestigious accolades, including the PEN America / Barbey Freedom to Write Award in two thousand nineteen and the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize in two thousand twenty. Her influence was recognized globally when she was named one of Time magazine's '100 Most Influential People' in two thousand nineteen.
After enduring a lengthy imprisonment, she was released on February tenth, two thousand twenty-one. However, as of July two thousand twenty-five, she remains under a de facto travel ban, continuing to symbolize the ongoing struggle for women's rights in Saudi Arabia.
