Lu Li, born on August 30, 1976, is a celebrated Chinese artistic gymnast who made her mark in the world of gymnastics during the early 1990s. She joined the Chinese national team in late 1991, but her journey to the Olympic stage was nearly derailed by a serious liver illness. Despite these challenges, Lu made a remarkable international debut at the World Championships in Paris in April 1992, showcasing her innovative routine on the uneven bars.
Lu Li is best known for her extraordinary performance at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, where she clinched the gold medal on the uneven bars with a perfect score of ten. This achievement was particularly notable as it coincided with Lavinia Miloșovici's own perfect ten, marking both gymnasts as the last to achieve this feat in Olympic history. Additionally, Lu earned a silver medal on the balance beam, tying with American gymnast Shannon Miller, with a score of nine point nine one two.
After her Olympic success, Lu continued to compete, winning the uneven bars title at the 1993 Chinese National Games before retiring shortly thereafter. In the year two thousand, she relocated to California, where she transitioned into coaching. Lu married Kim David Gussenhoven and welcomed a son named JD, further establishing her family life.
Lu's coaching career has taken her across various states, including a move to North Carolina in two thousand seven. By two thousand nine, she was coaching at Champion Gymnastics Academy in Stockton, California, before relocating to Washington. There, she took on a coaching role at Emerald City Gymnastics in Redmond and later at Tech Gymnastics in Woodinville. Currently, Lu Li is dedicated to coaching at Black Hills Gymnastics in Lacey, Washington, where she continues to inspire the next generation of gymnasts.
