Luc Lacourcière

Luc Lacourcière, born on October eighteenth, nineteen ten, was a prominent Québécois anthropologist and writer whose contributions to folklore studies have left an indelible mark on the field. Trained under the esteemed Marius Barbeau, Lacourcière not only honed his own expertise but also played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of future scholars, including the notable linguist Claude Poirier.

In nineteen forty-four, he founded the Archives de folklore (AF), an institution dedicated to the preservation and study of folklore, which he directed with passion until nineteen seventy-five. His leadership and vision helped establish the archives as a cornerstone of folkloric research in Quebec and beyond.

Beyond his administrative achievements, Lacourcière was a dedicated collector of fairy tales and an engaging university teacher, inspiring countless students with his knowledge and enthusiasm for ethnography. His legacy continues to be celebrated, particularly through the Luc-Lacourcière medal, awarded biennially since nineteen seventy-eight to honor outstanding contributions in the field.
