Luca Signorelli

Luca Signorelli, born in 1450, was a distinguished Italian Renaissance painter hailing from Cortona, Tuscany. Renowned for his exceptional skills as a draftsman, he mastered the technique of foreshortening, which set his work apart during the vibrant artistic period of the Renaissance.

His most celebrated achievement, the grand frescos of the Last Judgment, created between 1499 and 1503, adorn the Orvieto Cathedral and are widely regarded as his magnum opus. These monumental works showcase his innovative approach and deep understanding of human anatomy and perspective.

In his early forties, Signorelli returned to his hometown of Cortona after an extensive career that included significant projects in Florence, Siena, and Rome, where he contributed to a now-lost section of the Sistine Chapel between 1478 and 1484. With a solid reputation established, he chose to remain in Cortona for the remainder of his life, frequently traveling to nearby cities to fulfill various commissions.

Signorelli's artistic legacy continues to be celebrated, as evidenced by a major exhibition held in Cortona in 2023, marking the five hundredth anniversary of his passing. His influence on the art world remains significant, inspiring generations of artists who followed.
