Lucia Anguissola

Lucia Anguissola, born in 1536 in Cremona, Italy, was a talented Italian Mannerist painter of the late Renaissance. As the third daughter among seven siblings of Amilcare Anguissola and Bianca Ponzoni, Lucia was nurtured in an environment that valued both artistic and humanist education. Her father, a member of the Genoese minor nobility, encouraged his daughters to cultivate their artistic skills, which likely included training under her esteemed sister, Sofonisba Anguissola.

Lucia's artistic output primarily consisted of portraits, showcasing a style and technique reminiscent of her sister's work. Critics of her time recognized her exceptional talent, with seventeenth-century biographer Filippo Baldinucci noting that had she not passed away at a young age, she might have surpassed even Sofonisba in artistic prowess.

One of her notable works, the Portrait of Pietro Manna from the early 1560s, garnered praise from the renowned artist Giorgio Vasari, who remarked on its beauty and value. He acknowledged that Lucia's legacy, though brief, was significant, stating that she left behind a reputation comparable to that of her sister through her own remarkable paintings.

Lucia is also depicted in her sister Sofonisba's painting The Chess Game, created in 1555, where she appears alongside her younger sisters, Minerva and Europa. In this artwork, Lucia's direct gaze at the viewer establishes a connection with Sofonisba while inviting the audience to engage with the scene, reflecting the close bond among the siblings and their elevated social status.
