Lucretia Garfield

Lucretia Garfield, born on April nineteenth, eighteen thirty-two, in Garrettsville, Ohio, was a remarkable woman who served as the First Lady of the United States from March to September eighteen eighty-one. She was married to James A. Garfield, the twentieth president, after a long courtship that began at Geauga Seminary. Their marriage in eighteen fifty-eight marked the beginning of a partnership that would endure many challenges.

In the early years of their marriage, Lucretia faced difficulties as her husband was frequently away and became romantically involved with other women. Despite these trials, they welcomed seven children into their family, five of whom survived to adulthood. Lucretia was highly educated and well-versed in Washington politics, often acting as a trusted adviser to her husband, particularly during his front porch campaign for the presidency.

During her brief time in the White House, Lucretia was well-regarded and actively engaged in her role. Unfortunately, her tenure was cut short when she contracted malaria and sought recuperation in Long Branch, New Jersey. The tragic turn of events continued when, on July second, eighteen eighty-one, her husband was shot, leading to his death from infections related to his wounds two months later. Throughout this harrowing period, Lucretia remained by his side, garnering public sympathy.

After the loss of her husband, Lucretia returned to her former residence in Ohio, dedicating much of her life to preserving his legacy. She established what is considered the first presidential library, meticulously curating his papers and materials. Lucretia Garfield passed away in nineteen eighteen, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and dedication.
