Ludger Bastien

Ludger Bastien, born on October eighteenth, eighteen seventy-nine, was a notable Canadian politician who made history as the first First Nations Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Quebec. He represented the electoral district of Québec-Comté from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen twenty-seven, serving as a member of the Conservative Party of Quebec.

Hailing from Loretteville, Quebec, Bastien was a proud member of the Wendat Nation, which is located near the First Nations reserve at Wendake. Before entering the political arena, he held significant roles in the business sector, including serving as president of the companies Bastien et Bastien and Bastien, Gagnon et Cloutier. His leadership extended to his community, where he was the chief of Wendake from nineteen hundred four to nineteen hundred seventeen.

Bastien's political career began with a by-election victory in nineteen twenty-four, succeeding Aurèle Leclerc, who had resigned from the legislature. His tenure was marked by a commitment to representing his community, although he faced defeat in the nineteen twenty-seven provincial election. Despite this setback, he continued to pursue political opportunities, running for election again in nineteen thirty-one as a Conservative and later as a Union Nationale candidate in nineteen forty-four, though he was not re-elected.

In nineteen thirty-three, Bastien was considered for a potential Senate seat in Canada, but he was not appointed. His life came to a close in nineteen forty-eight in Montreal, leaving behind a legacy as a trailblazer for First Nations representation in Canadian politics.
