Ludovico di Varthema

Ludovico di Varthema, born around 1470, was an Italian explorer and writer whose adventurous spirit led him to become one of the first non-Muslim Europeans to enter the sacred city of Mecca as a pilgrim. His remarkable journey through the Middle East and beyond is chronicled in his seminal work, the Itinerario de Ludouico de Varthema Bolognese, published in Rome in 1510.
