Ludwig von Cobenzl, born on November twenty-first, seventeen fifty-three in Brussels, was a prominent diplomat and politician within the Habsburg monarchy. He was the son of Count Johann Karl Philipp von Cobenzl, a significant figure who served as the plenipotentiary minister for Empress Maria Theresia in the Austrian Netherlands. Growing up in a large family as one of ten children, he was connected to notable figures, including his brother-in-law, François de la Woestyne, who faced execution during the tumultuous times of the French Revolution.

Von Cobenzl's diplomatic career began to flourish in seventeen seventy-nine when he became a minister in St. Petersburg. His skills were further showcased during the Third Partition of Poland in seventeen ninety-five, where he successfully negotiated substantial territorial gains for the Habsburg Monarchy. His adeptness in diplomacy continued as he engaged in negotiations in Paris in eighteen hundred, aiming to conclude the War of the Second Coalition.

In a significant turn of events, von Cobenzl surrendered Mantua to the French on January twenty-sixth, eighteen oh one, unaware of the prior Armistice of Treviso.
