Luis de Morales

Luis de Morales, born in 1509, was a prominent Spanish painter whose artistry flourished during the Spanish Renaissance in the sixteenth century. Renowned as 'El Divino', Morales dedicated much of his creative energy to religious themes, producing numerous evocative representations of the Madonna and Child, as well as poignant depictions of the Passion.

His artistic journey was significantly shaped by the influences of Raphael Sanzio and the Lombard school of Leonardo da Vinci, particularly evident in his early works. Morales earned the moniker 'The Divine Morales' from his contemporaries, a testament to the remarkable realism and spiritual depth that permeated his paintings.

Critics have categorized his oeuvre into two distinct periods. The initial phase showcases the impact of Florentine masters like Michelangelo, while his later works exhibit a heightened intensity and anatomical precision, drawing parallels with the creations of German and Flemish Renaissance artists.

Today, the Prado Museum in Madrid proudly houses approximately twenty-two of Morales' paintings. His artistic legacy is also preserved in notable locations such as Salamanca's Cathedral, the Museum in Plasencia, and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid.
