Luis Fortuño

Luis Fortuño, born on October thirty-first, nineteen sixty, is a prominent Puerto Rican politician and lawyer who made significant contributions to the governance of Puerto Rico. He served as the governor of Puerto Rico from two thousand nine to two thousand thirteen, a period marked by his commitment to economic development and public service.

Before his tenure as governor, Fortuño held several key positions, including the first secretary of economic development and commerce from nineteen ninety-four to nineteen ninety-seven and the executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company from nineteen ninety-three to nineteen ninety-four. His leadership extended to the Puerto Rico Hotel Development Corporation during the administration of Pedro Rosselló, showcasing his dedication to enhancing Puerto Rico's economic landscape.

In two thousand four, Fortuño was elected as the resident commissioner of Puerto Rico, defeating Senator Roberto Prats. His term in the United States House of Representatives from two thousand five to two thousand nine was marked by his roles as Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Conference and co-chair of the Friends of Spain Caucus, as well as his involvement in the newly established United States House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Insular Affairs.

Fortuño's political journey reached a pivotal moment in two thousand eight when he secured the PNP gubernatorial nomination by a significant margin, overcoming former governor Pedro Rosselló in the primaries. He subsequently won the general election against incumbent governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá. Although he sought re-election in the two thousand twelve elections, he was narrowly defeated by Alejandro García Padilla by a mere zero point six percent.
