Luis Guillermo Solís

Luis Guillermo Solís, born on April 25, 1958, is a prominent Costa Rican politician, historian, diplomat, and university teacher. He served as the 47th President of Costa Rica from 2014 to 2018, representing the Citizens' Action Party (PAC). His election marked a significant milestone as he became the first president from the PAC, leading the 2014 presidential election with an unprecedented number of votes, the highest ever received by a candidate in the nation's history.

Throughout his career, Solís has been recognized for his contributions to both academia and politics. His extensive background in education and public service has shaped his approach to governance, emphasizing transparency and social responsibility. However, his presidency was not without controversy.

In May 2017, Solís faced scrutiny following allegations related to the expedited legal process of Chinese cement imports, a scandal known as Cementazo. The accusations implicated him in favoring businessman Juan Carlos Bolaños, leading to significant financial losses amounting to eight hundred million dollars. Despite the turmoil, the Public Prosecutor of Costa Rica dismissed the charges against him in May 2018, allowing him to maintain his position amidst the allegations.
