Luís Vaz de Torres

Luís Vaz de Torres, a notable figure of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, was a Galician and Portuguese explorer whose maritime endeavors left a significant mark on the history of navigation. Born around the year fifteen sixty-five, he emerged as a prominent captain in a Spanish expedition that would change the course of exploration in the region.

His most remarkable achievement came during his exploration of the strait that now bears his name, the Torres Strait. This body of water separates the Australian mainland from the island of New Guinea, and Torres is credited with being the first European to navigate these waters, a feat that showcased his skills as a seafarer and explorer.
