His journey in football began in his hometown of Wollongong, where he honed his skills playing youth football for Albion Park, the Wollongong Wolves, and the Australian Institute of Sport.

Wilkshire made his professional debut with the English club Middlesbrough, marking the start of an impressive career. In two thousand three, he transitioned to Bristol City, where he showcased his talents for three seasons before moving to the Netherlands in two thousand six to join Twente. His career took him to Russia with Dynamo Moscow, and he later returned to the Netherlands to play for Feyenoord, where he parted ways with the club in August two thousand fifteen by mutual consent.
