Lyudmila Karachkina, born on September third, nineteen forty-eight, is a distinguished astronomer renowned for her contributions to the discovery of minor planets. Her journey in astronomy began in nineteen seventy-eight when she joined the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy in Leningrad as a staff astronomer. Her research at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory primarily focused on astrometry and photometry, leading to significant advancements in the field.
Throughout her career, Karachkina has been credited by the Minor Planet Center with the discovery of one hundred thirty minor planets. Among her notable discoveries are the Amor asteroid 5324 Lyapunov and the Trojan asteroid 3063 Makhaon, both of which highlight her expertise and dedication to astronomical research.
In two thousand four, she earned her Ph.D. in astronomy from Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, further solidifying her academic credentials. In recognition of her contributions, the inner main-belt asteroid 8019 Karachkina was named in her honor by German astronomers Lutz D. Schmadel and Freimut Börngen in nineteen ninety.
Lyudmila is also a proud mother of two daughters, Maria and Renata. Additionally, the minor planet 8089 Yukar was named after her husband, Yurij Vasil'evicht Karachkin, a physics teacher at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory's school, showcasing the family's deep connection to the field of science.
