Lyudmila Zykina

Lyudmila Zykina, born on June tenth, nineteen twenty-nine in Moscow, was a celebrated national folk singer of Russia, renowned for her powerful voice and deep connection to Russian musical traditions. She began her illustrious career in 1947 when she joined the Pyatnitsky Choir, where her talent quickly became evident.

In the year nineteen sixty, Zykina embarked on a solo career that would elevate her to national prominence. Her friendships with influential figures, including Ekaterina Furtseva, the Minister of Culture of the Soviet Union, and her status as a favorite of Leonid Brezhnev, further solidified her place in the cultural landscape of the time. Notably, she was also admired by Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, performing in Pyongyang six times at their invitation, and even returning in two thousand eight to aid Kim Jong-il's recovery from illness.

Throughout her career, Zykina received numerous accolades, including the Lenin Prize in nineteen seventy and the Order of Lenin in nineteen seventy-nine. She was honored with the titles of People's Artist of the USSR in nineteen seventy-three and Hero of Socialist Labour in nineteen eighty-seven. Dmitri Shostakovich praised her as not just a brilliant interpreter but also a co-creator with composers.

Her signature songs, such as 'Techot Volga' and 'Orenburgskii platok,' remain beloved in the Russian musical canon. In recognition of her impact, the asteroid 4879 Zykina was named in her honor. Sadly, Lyudmila Zykina passed away on July first, two thousand nine, after suffering a heart attack, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of music.
