M. G. K. Menon

M. G. K. Menon, born on August twenty-eighth, nineteen twenty-eight in Mangalore, was a distinguished Indian physicist and policy maker. He made significant contributions to the field of elementary particle physics, earning his PhD from the University of Bristol under the mentorship of Nobel Laureate Cecil F. Powell. Menon joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in nineteen fifty-five, where he embarked on groundbreaking experiments with cosmic rays, exploring the properties of fundamental particles.

Throughout his illustrious career, Menon held several prestigious positions, including Chairperson of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in nineteen seventy-two and Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from nineteen seventy-four to nineteen seventy-eight. His leadership extended to roles such as the Director of TIFR from nineteen sixty-six to nineteen seventy-five, President of the Indian Statistical Institute, and the Vikram Sarabhai Fellow of ISRO.

Menon's scientific endeavors included setting up balloon flight experiments and conducting deep underground experiments with cosmic ray neutrinos at the Kolar Gold Fields. His influence in the scientific community was further recognized through his presidency at the National Academy of Sciences, India, and his chairmanship of the Boards of Governors at both the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad.

A recipient of the Abdus Salam Award and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Menon was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in May nineteen seventy. His legacy is honored through the naming of asteroid seven thousand five hundred sixty-four Gokumenon in late two thousand eight, marking him as one of the most prominent scientists from Kerala.
