Ma Duanlin

Ma Duanlin, born in the year twelve forty-five, emerged as a prominent figure in Chinese history, renowned for his contributions as a politician, historian, and scholar. His lineage traced back to the esteemed Southern Song Minister of the East, Ma Tingluan, whose vast collection of historical documents greatly influenced Ma Duanlin's scholarly pursuits.

In the year thirteen seventeen, during the Yuan Dynasty, Ma Duanlin achieved a significant milestone with the publication of the 'Wenxian Tongkao,' a comprehensive encyclopedia that spanned three hundred forty-eight volumes. This monumental work was the culmination of years of dedication, beginning in twelve seventy-three when he commenced its compilation, drawing upon his father's extensive resources and guidance.

Following the passing of his father, Ma Duanlin was summoned to serve the Yuan dynasty, where he played a pivotal role in revitalizing China's educational system. His scholarly endeavors extended beyond mere documentation; he provided detailed accounts of various regions, including Champa, Chi Tu, Pan Pan, the Khmer Empire, and the Kediri Kingdom.

Among his notable historical insights, Ma Duanlin chronicled Jayavarman VII's campaign against Champa in retaliation for their invasion in eleven seventy-seven, illustrating the complexities of regional power dynamics and the long-lasting impacts of such conflicts.
