Maajid Nawaz

Maajid Nawaz, born on November second, nineteen seventy-seven, is a prominent British politician, essayist, and human rights defender. He gained recognition as the founding chairman of the think tank Quilliam, which he co-founded with former Islamists, including Ed Husain. Nawaz's journey is marked by his transformation from a member of the Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir to a vocal advocate for secularism within Islam.

His early life in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, was shaped by his British Pakistani heritage. Nawaz's involvement with Hizb ut-Tahrir led to his arrest in Egypt in December two thousand one, where he spent five years in prison. During this time, he immersed himself in literature on human rights and connected with Amnesty International, which later recognized him as a prisoner of conscience.

In two thousand seven, Nawaz renounced his Islamist past and began advocating for a secular interpretation of Islam. His autobiography, Radical: My Journey out of Islamist Extremism, published in two thousand twelve, chronicles his experiences and evolution. He further explored themes of tolerance in his second book, Islam and the Future of Tolerance, co-authored with Sam Harris in two thousand fifteen.

Nawaz's political career includes his candidacy for the Liberal Democrats in the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency during the two thousand fifteen United Kingdom general election. Despite facing criticism for promoting controversial claims related to COVID-19 and the two thousand twenty United States presidential election, he remains a significant figure in discussions surrounding Islamism in the UK.
