Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Maarten 't Hart

Maarten 't Hart, born on November twenty-fifth, nineteen forty-four, is a distinguished Dutch writer and biologist. He initially trained in zoology and ethology at Leiden University, where he later taught before dedicating himself to writing full-time in the 1980s. His literary journey began in nineteen seventy-one with the novel 'Stenen voor een ransuil' ('Stones for a Long-Eared Owl'), published under the name Martin Hart.

't Hart has authored numerous novels, including notable works such as 'Het Woeden der Gehele Wereld' and 'De kroongetuige.' His writings have been translated into various European languages, gaining particular popularity in Germany. Among his English-translated works are 'Een vlucht regenwulpen' ('A Flight of Curlews'), 'De aansprekers' ('Bearers of Bad Tidings'), and 'De zonnewijzer' ('The Sundial'), along with several short stories.

The themes prevalent in 't Hart's novels often reflect autobiographical elements, exploring his childhood in Maassluis, his upbringing in a strict Protestant environment, and his subsequent rebellion against it. His narratives delve into complex relationships, such as the love between a man and a woman, and the dynamics between an elderly man and a young man, often touching on themes of guilt. His passion for nature is evident in his detailed descriptions, while his love for classical music, particularly the works of Bach, Mozart, and Schubert, permeates his writing.

In addition to fiction, 't Hart has contributed to non-fiction literature, with works like 'Ratten' ('Rats'), which was translated into English by Arnold Pomerans. A supporter of the Party for Animals, he once considered running for a position in the European elections but faced challenges due to his lack of an official identity document. Beyond writing, he is a well-known radio and television personality and a regular contributor to daily newspapers.

Currently residing in Warmond, near Leiden, with his wife, 't Hart enjoys music, playing both the piano and the organ, and is an avid reader, consuming six books a week in multiple languages. Despite his literary success, he remains detached from the film industry, having had a less than favorable experience as a 'rat consultant' for Werner Herzog's film 'Nosferatu the Vampyre,' which inspired him to write a story about the experience.
