Machiko Hasegawa

Machiko Hasegawa, born on January 30, 1920, was a pioneering figure in the world of manga, recognized as one of the first female manga artists in Japan. Her remarkable journey began in 1946 when she created the beloved comic strip, Sazae-san, which would go on to become a cultural phenomenon.

By 1949, Sazae-san achieved national circulation through the Asahi Shimbun, captivating audiences across the country. Hasegawa's unique storytelling and relatable characters resonated with readers, leading to the comic's daily publication for nearly three decades.

Hasegawa's dedication to her craft resulted in an impressive legacy, with her comics printed in digest format throughout Japan. By the mid-1990s, her estate had sold over sixty million copies, a testament to her influence and popularity in the manga industry.

In February 1974, after years of success, Hasegawa made the decision to retire, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to inspire future generations of artists and writers.
