Madame de Montespan

Françoise-Athénaïs de Rochechouart de Mortemart, known as Madame de Montespan, was born on October fifth, sixteen forty, into one of France's oldest noble families. Her marriage to the Marquis of Montespan in sixteen sixty-three marked the beginning of her ascent in the royal court, where she initially served as a maid of honour to Princess Henrietta, Duchess of Orléans, before becoming a lady-in-waiting to Queen Maria Theresa.

Renowned for her beauty and sharp wit, Madame de Montespan captured the heart of King Louis XIV in the late sixteen sixties, eventually becoming his most celebrated royal mistress. Her influence at court was so profound that contemporaries often referred to her as the 'true Queen of France.' During their relationship, she bore seven children with the king, six of whom were later legitimized, although only four survived infancy.

However, her reputation suffered a significant blow due to her alleged involvement in the Affair of the Poisons, which began in sixteen seventy-seven. This scandal led to her decline in royal favour, prompting her to withdraw to the convent of Filles de Saint-Joseph in Paris in sixteen ninety-one. Thirteen years later, she moved to the Château d'Oiron, where she dedicated her life to charity, patronage, and penance.

Madame de Montespan passed away on May twenty-seventh, seventeen oh seven, at the age of sixty-six. Her legacy endures, as she is an ancestress of several royal houses across Europe, including those of Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Portugal, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
