Maddalena de' Medici (1473–1528)

Maddalena de' Medici, born on July 25, 1473, in Florence, was the daughter of the renowned Lorenzo de' Medici and Clarice Orsini. Raised in a family steeped in the humanistic traditions of the Renaissance, she received an education that emphasized culture and intellect, guided by prominent figures such as Angelo Poliziano. In February 1487, she became engaged to Franceschetto Cybo, the son of Pope Innocent VIII, and they married in January 1488, bringing a substantial dowry of four thousand ducats to the union. This marriage not only strengthened her family's ties to the Vatican but also facilitated her brother Giovanni's appointment as a cardinal.

Throughout her life, Maddalena wielded her influence to assist friends and the less fortunate, leveraging her connections with her father, her brother Piero, and the pope to secure aid and positions within the church and government. In 1488, she made a significant investment by purchasing a thermal bath resort in Stigliano, which she successfully renovated into a profitable establishment.

After her brother Giovanni ascended to the papacy as Pope Leo X in 1513, Maddalena relocated to Rome. Shortly after his election, Pope Leo honored her son Innocenzo with the title of Cardinal. In 1515, she was granted Roman citizenship and a pension by her brother, further solidifying her status. Maddalena was dedicated to arranging advantageous marriages for her children into noble families, and she continued her role as a patron, negotiating with Pope Leo and her nephew Lorenzo to secure protection, funds, and the release of clients from prison and exile.

Maddalena de' Medici passed away in Rome, and in a gesture of familial respect, she was buried in St. Peter's Basilica by her cousin, Pope Clement VII.
