Madeleine de Scudéry

Madeleine de Scudéry, born on November fifteenth, sixteen oh seven, was a prominent French writer and intellectual whose influence spanned the literary landscape of the seventeenth century. After the death of her uncle in sixteen thirty-seven, she relocated to Paris with her brother, Georges de Scudéry, a playwright. This move marked the beginning of her illustrious career, during which she often published under her brother's name, George.

Her extensive knowledge of ancient history suggests that she received a thorough education in Greek and Latin, which greatly informed her literary works. Scudéry quickly became a key figure in the Hôtel de Rambouillet coterie, a gathering of intellectuals known for their emphasis on the art of conversation and the cultivation of wit. She later established her own salon, the Société du samedi, which became a hub for literary and philosophical discourse.

Recognized as the first bluestocking of France and indeed the world, Scudéry wrote under the pseudonym Sapho and her own name throughout the latter half of the seventeenth century. Her writings not only showcased her literary prowess but also reflected her deep engagement with moral and philosophical questions of her time.

In her personal life, Scudéry formed a close romantic bond with Paul Pellisson, a relationship that endured until his death in sixteen ninety-three. Despite her deep emotional connections, she chose to remain unmarried, dedicating her life to her literary pursuits and the vibrant intellectual community she fostered.
