Madeline Manning

Madeline Manning, born on February 11, 1948, is a celebrated former American middle-distance runner and Olympic champion. Her remarkable athletic career spanned from 1967 to 1981, during which she secured ten national titles and established numerous American records. Manning's Olympic journey included participation in the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Summer Games, where she made history by winning a gold medal in the 800 meters at the 1968 Olympics, becoming one of only two American women to achieve this feat.

Diagnosed with spinal meningitis at the tender age of three, Manning's early life was marked by health challenges. However, her resilience shone through as she overcame these obstacles to become a prominent athlete. Her first national title came in 1965 while she was still a student at John Hay High School in Cleveland, where she triumphed in the 440-yard run at the girls' AAU championships. This victory set the stage for her future successes, including ten national indoor and outdoor titles from 1967 to 1980.

A proud graduate of Tennessee State University, Manning is also known for her affiliation with the renowned TigerBelles track team. In 1984, she was inducted into the United States National Track and Field Hall of Fame, solidifying her legacy in the sport. Beyond athletics, she has made significant contributions as the founder and president of the United States Council for Sports Chaplaincy, serving as a chaplain at multiple Olympic Games from 1988 to 2008.

In addition to her athletic and chaplaincy work, Manning is an accomplished author, speaker, and contemporary gospel recording artist. She released the gospel soul album 'Madeline: Running for Jesus' in 1976 and was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in 2005. Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Divinity degree at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, while also serving as a chaplain for the WNBA's Tulsa Shock.

Throughout her career, Manning competed under the hyphenated name of Madeline Manning-Jackson after marrying John Jackson in 1969, though they divorced the following year. Her son, John Jackson III, went on to become the NCAA Triple Jump champion at the University of Oklahoma. After a brief retirement, Manning returned to the sport with renewed vigor, showcasing her determination and passion for running.
