Mae Faggs

Mae Faggs, born on April 10, 1932, in Mays Landing, New Jersey, was a remarkable American sprinter who made her mark in the world of athletics. After graduating from Bayside High School, she honed her skills at Tennessee State University under the guidance of the esteemed Hall of Fame coach Ed Temple.

Faggs represented the United States at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where she achieved the pinnacle of success by winning a gold medal in the 4 × 100 meter relay alongside her teammates Barbara Jones, Janet Moreau, and Catherine Hardy. Four years later, she returned to the Olympic stage at the Melbourne Games as the only returning member of her relay team, joining forces with Margaret Matthews, Wilma Rudolph, and Isabelle Daniels, ultimately securing a bronze medal.

In addition to her Olympic achievements, Mae Faggs excelled in national competitions, winning the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 100-yard dash in a record time of ten point eight seconds in nineteen fifty-five. She continued to dominate the 100 meters, repeating her victory the following year with a time of eleven point seven seconds. Faggs also triumphed in the 200 meters, clinching the title three consecutive times from nineteen fifty-four to nineteen fifty-six, and showcased her indoor prowess by winning the 220 yard dash six times between nineteen forty-nine and nineteen fifty-six.

Beyond her athletic career, Mae dedicated many years to teaching athletics at Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she led the girls' track and field team to an Ohio championship in nineteen eighty-nine. Her contributions to the sport were recognized in nineteen seventy-six when she was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

Mae Faggs passed away on January 27, 2000, at her home in Woodlawn, Ohio, at the age of sixty-seven, after a courageous battle with cancer.
