Maeda Toshiie, born on January fifteenth, fifteen thirty-eight, was a prominent samurai and one of the leading generals under the illustrious Oda Nobunaga during the tumultuous Sengoku period. His military prowess and strategic acumen were instrumental in shaping the course of Japanese history during the sixteenth century, extending into the Azuchi–Momoyama period.

Known for his exceptional skill with the yari, or spear, Toshiie earned the nickname Yari no Mataza, reflecting his mastery of this weapon. His common name, Matazaemon, became synonymous with his reputation as a formidable warrior on the battlefield.

As a member of the esteemed Echizen Sanninshu, alongside notable figures such as Sassa Narimasa and Fuwa Mitsuharu, Toshiie played a crucial role in the military and political landscape of his time. His contributions were recognized by the imperial court, where he attained the prestigious rank of Great Counselor, or Dainagon, a testament to his influence and standing.
