Magdalena Andersson, born on January twenty-third, nineteen sixty-seven, is a prominent Swedish politician and economist. She has been a significant figure in Swedish politics, serving as the Leader of the Opposition since two thousand twenty-two and as the Leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party since two thousand twenty-one. Her political career in the Riksdag began in two thousand fourteen, representing Stockholm County.
Andersson made history as Sweden's first female Prime Minister, a position she held from November twenty-ninth, two thousand twenty-one, until October eighteenth, two thousand twenty-two. Before her premiership, she was the Minister for Finance from two thousand fourteen to two thousand twenty-one and chaired the International Monetary and Financial Committee from two thousand twenty to two thousand twenty-two. Her leadership journey began in the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League in nineteen eighty-three.
After earning a master's degree in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics in nineteen ninety-two, Andersson worked as an adviser and director of planning in Göran Persson's administration and later as an adviser to Mona Sahlin. Following the two thousand fourteen general election, she was elected to the Riksdag and appointed Minister for Finance in Stefan Löfven's government.
In August two thousand twenty-one, when Löfven announced his intention to step down, Andersson emerged as the leading candidate to succeed him, ultimately becoming the leader of the Social Democrats. Although she was initially elected Prime Minister on November twenty-fourth, two thousand twenty-one, she resigned shortly after due to her coalition partner's departure from the government. She officially took office on November thirtieth, two thousand twenty-one, marking a significant milestone in Swedish history.
After her coalition lost its majority in the two thousand twenty-two general election, Andersson announced her resignation as Prime Minister, paving the way for Ulf Kristersson to succeed her on October eighteenth of the same year.
