Maggie Hassan

Maggie Hassan, born on February twenty-seventh, nineteen fifty-eight, is a prominent American politician and attorney currently serving as the junior United States senator for New Hampshire since two thousand seventeen. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, she previously held the esteemed position of the eighty-first governor of New Hampshire from two thousand thirteen to two thousand seventeen.

Hassan's academic journey began at Brown University, followed by earning her Juris Doctor from the Northeastern University School of Law in nineteen eighty-five. Her legal career commenced at the law firm Palmer & Dodge, and she later served as associate general counsel for Brigham and Women’s Hospital, showcasing her commitment to public service and legal expertise.

Her political career took off when she first ran for the New Hampshire Senate in two thousand two, although she faced defeat against incumbent Russell Prescott. Undeterred, she successfully won a seat in the Senate in two thousand four, serving from two thousand five to two thousand ten, where she became the state senate majority leader in two thousand eight.

In two thousand twelve, Hassan made a significant leap by running for governor, triumphing over former state senator Jacalyn Cilley in the Democratic primary and defeating Republican nominee Ovide M. Lamontagne in the general election. She was reelected in two thousand fourteen and took on leadership roles, including vice chair of the Democratic Governors Association and serving as a superdelegate at the two thousand sixteen Democratic National Convention.

Hassan's political journey continued with her narrow victory over Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte in the two thousand sixteen U.S. Senate race, winning by approximately one thousand votes. She was reelected in two thousand twenty-two, serving alongside fellow former governor Jeanne Shaheen. Notably, Hassan, Shaheen, and Ayotte are the only women in U.S. history to have been elected both governor and U.S. senator. With Shaheen's anticipated retirement in two thousand twenty-seven, Hassan is poised to become New Hampshire's senior senator and the dean of the state's congressional delegation.
