Magnus Eriksson

Magnus Eriksson, born in the year 1316, ascended to the throne as King of Sweden in 1319, a position he held until 1364. His reign marked a significant period in Swedish history, characterized by political maneuvering and territorial governance.

In addition to his role as King of Sweden, Magnus also ruled as King of Norway, known as Magnus VII, from 1319 to 1355. His influence extended beyond Sweden, as he was the ruler of Scania from 1332 to 1360, showcasing his importance in the Nordic region.

Medieval Swedish monarchs did not adopt regnal numbers in their titles, leading to some ambiguity in how Magnus is referred to in historical texts. He is sometimes called Magnus II, Magnus III, or Magnus IV, reflecting the varying interpretations of his legacy.

His reign was not without its challenges, and he was often referred to by his adversaries as Magnus Smek, which translates to 'Magnus the Caresser.' Despite the controversies, he remains one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Swedish history, surpassed only by the current king, Carl XVI Gustaf, in the year 2018.
