Magnus Maximus

Magnus Maximus, born in Gallaecia in the year three hundred thirty-five, emerged as a significant figure in Roman history. He began his career as an officer in Britain under the command of Theodosius the Elder during the tumultuous period known as the Great Conspiracy.

In the year three hundred eighty-three, Maximus was proclaimed emperor in Britannia, marking the beginning of his reign in the West. His rise to power came at the expense of Emperor Gratian, whom he usurped. The following year, he extended his influence into Gaul, while Gratian's brother, Valentinian II, maintained control over Italy, Pannonia, Hispania, and Africa.

Maximus's ambition ultimately led him to invade Italy in the year three hundred eighty-seven. However, this bold move resulted in his defeat at the hands of Theodosius I during the Battle of Poetovio in three hundred eighty-eight. This defeat not only marked the end of his reign but also signified a pivotal moment in the decline of direct imperial presence in Northern Gaul and Britannia.
