Mahadevi Varma

Mahadevi Varma, born on March 26, 1907, was a prominent Indian poetess, essayist, and short-story writer, celebrated for her significant contributions to Hindi literature. As a key figure in the Chhayavad movement, she is often regarded as one of its four luminaries, influencing the literary landscape of her time.

Throughout her prolific career, which spanned from 1930 to 1988, Varma published eight poetry collections alongside numerous essays and prose works. Her writings reflect her personal experiences, particularly in the context of the Partition of India, and her commitment to social reform, especially in advocating for women's liberation.

Literary critics have often referred to her as the 'modern Meera,' a testament to her profound impact on Hindi literature. The poet Nirālā famously described her as 'Sarasvati in the vast temple of Hindi Literature,' underscoring her importance in the cultural fabric of the language.

Varma's poetic style is characterized by a softer diction in Khadi Boli Hindi, a departure from the traditional Braj Bhasha. Her songs are renowned for their expressive language and subtlety, showcasing her deep understanding of music. Celebrated as one of the most influential female writers of the twentieth century, her centenary was honored in 2007, and in 2018, Google paid tribute to her legacy with a special Doodle.
