Mahmoud Abbas

Mahmoud Abbas, born on November fifteenth, nineteen thirty-five, is a prominent Palestinian politician and jurist. He has been a significant figure in Palestinian politics since he was elected President of the Palestinian National Authority on January ninth, two thousand five. His term was initially set to end on January fifteenth, two thousand nine, but he extended it until the next election in two thousand ten, citing the PLO constitution. On December sixteenth, two thousand nine, he was voted into office indefinitely by the PLO Central Council, a decision that was met with resistance from Hamas, his party's main rival.

In addition to his presidency, Abbas has served as the fourth chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since two thousand four and was elected chairman of the Fatah party in two thousand nine. His leadership has been marked by efforts to negotiate peace and establish a framework for the Israel-Palestine two-state solution.
