Mahmud Barzanji

Mahmud Barzanji, born in 1878, emerged as a prominent Kurdish leader during a tumultuous period marked by a series of uprisings against the British Mandate of Iraq. His leadership was rooted in his heritage as sheikh of a Qadiriyah Sufi family belonging to the Barzanji clan, hailing from the city of Sulaymaniyah, now part of the Kurdistan Region.

In the aftermath of World War I, when the British established the Mandate of Mesopotamia, they sought effective governance over the Kurdish north. In 1918, they appointed Barzanji as the governor of the Kurds in Sulaimaniyah, a role that underscored his influence. However, his determination to lead was not universally embraced among the Kurdish populace, as tribal rivalries and differing interests complicated the political landscape.

Throughout his leadership, Barzanji was named King of Kurdistan during several uprisings, symbolizing the aspirations of many Kurds for autonomy and self-determination. His legacy is intertwined with the struggles of the Kurdish people during a critical juncture in their history, reflecting both the challenges and the resilience of a community seeking recognition and rights.
