Mahmud I (Seljuk sultan)

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Mahmud I (Seljuk sultan)

Mahmud I was an infant sultan of the Seljuk Empire, reigning from 1092 to 1094. Born in 1088, he was the younger son of the illustrious sultan Malik Shah I. His ascension to the throne was marked by the significant influence of his mother, Terken Khatun, who wielded most of the power during his brief reign.

Proclaimed sultan in Baghdad by the caliph al-Muqtadi, Mahmud's rule came at a tumultuous time for the Seljuk Empire. The vast empire, once unified under his father's leadership, began to fragment, leading to instability and conflict.

During his short time in power, Mahmud faced numerous challenges, including a significant military defeat at Borujerd. This loss weakened his position and ultimately led to a tragic end for both him and his mother, as they were assassinated by the family of the former vizir Nizam al-Mulk.
