Maia Sandu

Maia Sandu, born on May 24, 1972, is a prominent Moldovan economist and politician who has made significant strides in her country's political landscape. Since her election in 2020, she has served as the sixth president of Moldova, becoming the first woman to hold this office. Sandu is also the founder and former leader of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), and her political journey includes a brief tenure as prime minister from June to November 2019, which ended with a vote of no-confidence.

Before ascending to the presidency, Sandu held the position of minister of education from 2012 to 2015 and was a member of the Moldovan parliament in 2014-2015 and again in 2019. Her leadership has been characterized by a strong pro-European stance, advocating for Moldova's integration into the European Union and overseeing the country's granting of EU candidate status.

Sandu has been vocal in her opposition to Russia's actions in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for Moldova to reduce its economic dependence on Russia. Her political platform is heavily focused on anti-corruption measures, economic reform, and liberalization, alongside a commitment to closer ties with Europe. In February 2023, she accused Russia of attempting to orchestrate a coup against her government, further solidifying her position as a defender of Moldovan sovereignty.

In the 2024 Moldovan presidential election, Sandu was re-elected, with her campaign heavily influenced by geopolitical issues, including a referendum on constitutional amendments to reflect the desire for EU membership. Her leadership continues to navigate the complexities of Russian electoral interference, showcasing her resilience and dedication to Moldova's future.
