Makoto Shinkai, born on February 9, 1973, is a renowned Japanese filmmaker and novelist, celebrated for his visually stunning anime feature films that often explore the emotional landscapes of teenagers and high school students. As a co-founder of CoMix Wave Films, Shinkai has carved a niche in the animation industry, captivating audiences with his unique storytelling and artistic vision.

Shinkai's journey began in 1996 as a video game animator with Nihon Falcom, but it was his foray into filmmaking that truly set him apart. His early work, the original video animation (OVA) She and Her Cat, released in 1999, garnered attention and laid the groundwork for his future successes. In 2002, he released Voices of a Distant Star, marking his first feature with CoMix Wave, followed by his debut feature film, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in 2004.
