Malalai Kakar

Malalai Kakar, born in 1967, emerged as a pioneering figure in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, serving as a police officer during a tumultuous period from 2001 to 2021. As a lieutenant colonel, she held the esteemed position of head of Kandahar's department of crimes against women, where she dedicated her career to combating gender-based violence and advocating for women's rights.

Her journey in law enforcement began in 1982, inspired by her family's legacy in the police force. Kakar made history as the first woman to graduate from the Kandahar Police Academy, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for future generations of female officers. Her commitment to justice and equality led her to become the first female investigator within the Kandahar Police Department.

Despite facing numerous death threats due to her groundbreaking work, Kakar remained resolute in her mission. Tragically, her life was cut short when she was assassinated by the Taliban on September twenty-eight, two thousand eight. Her legacy continues to inspire many, symbolizing courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
