Malik al-Ashtar

Malik al-Ashtar, born as Malik ibn al-Harith al-Nakhaʿī al-Madhḥijī, was a distinguished Arab military leader and tribal chief of the Nakha branch of the Madhhij confederation. His legacy is deeply intertwined with the tumultuous period of the Rashidun Caliphate, where he emerged as a pivotal figure known for his unwavering loyalty and formidable prowess as a general under the fourth Caliph, Ali ibn Abi Talib.

In the city of Kufa, Malik became a prominent leader of the opposition against Caliph Uthman, significantly influencing the events that led to Uthman's demise. Following Ali's ascension to the caliphate, Malik was entrusted with critical military responsibilities during the First Fitna, showcasing his strategic acumen in key battles such as the Battle of the Camel and the Battle of Siffin.

Tragically, Malik's life was cut short in the year six hundred fifty-eight when he was assassinated by poisoning in al-Qulzum while en route to take up the governorship of Egypt. His untimely death represented a significant setback for Ali's administration and played a crucial role in the subsequent Umayyad conquest of Egypt, marking a turning point in the early Islamic period.
