Mamunul Haque

Mamunul Haque, born in November nineteen seventy-three, is a prominent Bangladeshi Islamic scholar and political figure. He currently serves as the Emir of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and holds the position of Joint Secretary-General of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. Following in the footsteps of his father, Azizul Haque, a respected religious scholar and political leader, Mamunul succeeded him as Sheikh al-Hadith at Jamia Rahmania Arabia, continuing a legacy of religious scholarship.

Haque is widely recognized for his staunch advocacy for the establishment of an Islamic state and the incorporation of Sharia laws into governmental policies. His influence has been particularly notable during national crises, where he emerged as a leading voice against the construction of a sculpture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and organized significant anti-Modi protests in twenty twenty and twenty twenty-one, solidifying his status as a key leader within Hefazat.

His rhetoric has not been without controversy; in April twenty nineteen, the Ministry of Home Affairs labeled him as one of fifteen 'controversial speakers' due to his provocative sermons. In the twenty twenty-six Bangladeshi general election, he contested the Dhaka-13 constituency but faced defeat against Bobby Hajjaj of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, alleging that ballot design irregularities contributed to his loss.

Haque's political stance has made him a polarizing figure, particularly regarding his opposition to secular reforms and his participation in movements aimed at limiting women's roles in society. His views on gender and religious minorities have drawn criticism from human rights organizations and secular activists, who describe them as exclusionary. He has faced imprisonment three times under the Sheikh Hasina regime, but following her fall, he engaged in governmental discussions that led to the formation of the Yunus ministry, which included a member from Hefazat.

In addition to his political endeavors, Mamunul Haque is an adjunct professor at the Asian University of Bangladesh and serves as the editor of Rahmani Paigam, a monthly magazine published in Dhaka, further showcasing his commitment to both education and religious discourse.
