Man of the Hole

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Man of the Hole

The Man of the Hole, also known as the Tanaru Indian, was an enigmatic figure who lived in solitude within the depths of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil's Rondônia state. Born around the 1960s, he became the last known member of his Indigenous people, a community that faced tragic genocide at the hands of Brazilian settlers from the 1970s to the 1990s. His existence was a testament to resilience, as he chose to remain isolated from the outside world until his death in July 2022.

Living a life defined by hunting and gathering, the Man of the Hole moved frequently throughout his territory, which was officially recognized and protected by the Brazilian government in 2007. His solitary lifestyle was marked by the creation of deep holes at each of his former homes, the purpose of which remains a mystery, leading to his distinctive nickname.

Despite the dangers posed by encroaching settlers, including a harrowing attack by armed ranchers in 2009, he continued to inhabit his land in isolation. His story is not just one of survival but also a poignant reminder of the cultural loss experienced by Indigenous peoples. Tragically, he was found deceased in his home in August 2022, marking the end of an era for his people and their legacy.
