Mang of Xia

Mang of Xia, known as Huang, was the ninth king of the semi-legendary Xia dynasty, a pivotal figure in early Chinese history. His reign is believed to have lasted for eighteen years, during which he made significant contributions to the cultural and spiritual practices of his time.

One of Mang's most notable achievements was the establishment of the Sinking Sacrifice Ceremony, known as Chen Ji. This ritual involved the sinking of three common livestock animals—a cow, a pig, and a sheep—along with a memorial jade into the Yellow River. This act was intended as an offering to the water spirits, seeking peace and safety for his people.

The Sinking Sacrifice Ceremony not only reflected Mang's devotion to the spiritual well-being of his kingdom but also laid the groundwork for a practice that would gain widespread importance throughout Chinese history. His legacy continues to resonate in the cultural traditions that followed.
