Mangas Coloradas

Mangas Coloradas, born in 1792, was a prominent Apache tribal chief and a key figure among the Mimbreño division of the Central Apaches. His homeland extended west from the Rio Grande, encompassing much of what is now southwestern New Mexico. Renowned for his leadership and military prowess, he played a significant role in the resistance against both Mexican and American forces during the tumultuous 19th century.

Known by the name Mangas Coloradas, which translates to 'red sleeves' in Spanish, he was originally named A Bedonkohe, meaning 'In Front of the End People.' His strategic marriage into the Copper Mines local group of the Tchihende solidified his position as the principal chief of the entire Tchihende Apache division. This union not only enhanced his influence but also connected him to other notable leaders, including his son-in-law, Chiricahua chief Cochise, and Mimbreño chief Victorio.

Mangas Coloradas is celebrated as one of the most significant Native American leaders of his time, recognized for his fierce resistance and fighting achievements. His legacy is intertwined with the struggles of the Apache people, as he navigated the complexities of leadership during a period marked by conflict and change. His long-time companion, chief Cuchillo Negro, also played a vital role in the leadership of the Tchihende Apache division, further highlighting the collaborative nature of Apache governance.
