Gopalaratnam Subramaniam, widely known as Mani Ratnam, was born on June second, nineteen fifty-six. He is a distinguished Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter, primarily recognized for his contributions to Tamil cinema, along with notable works in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada films. Renowned as one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema, Ratnam has garnered numerous accolades, including seven National Film Awards and four Filmfare Awards.

Despite hailing from a film family, Ratnam initially pursued a career in management after completing his postgraduate studies. His entry into the film industry began with the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi in nineteen eighty-three. Although his early films did not achieve commercial success, he persevered and eventually made a significant impact with Mouna Ragam in nineteen eighty-six, which earned him his first Filmfare Best Director Award.

Throughout his career, Ratnam has directed several critically acclaimed films, including Nayakan and Anjali, both of which were selected as India's official entries for The Academy Awards. His filmography features a diverse range of genres, from romantic dramas to crime thrillers, with notable works such as Roja, Bombay, and Dil Se. His romantic trilogy, consisting of Mouna Ragam, Alai Payuthey, and O Kadhal Kanmani, further solidified his status as a master storyteller.

In recent years, Ratnam has ventured into epic historical dramas with Ponniyin Selvan: I and Ponniyin Selvan: II, both of which were based on the celebrated Indian epic by Kalki Krishnamurthy. These films not only received critical acclaim but also achieved remarkable commercial success, with the first installment becoming the thirty-fifth highest-grossing film in India and the fifth highest-grossing Tamil film.
